Over the years I have seen what I believe to be original 24 gallon tank equipped 1961 and 1962 cars. I have read about the 24 gallon fuel tank, RPO 1625 in 1959 and RPO 1625A in 1960 being available but have never seen an example of either of these years equipped as such. Does anyone know of one? A picture would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: C1 24 Gallon Fuel Tank
Zora's letter indicates nothing about a 24-gallon tank in 59--as Loren indicated, the letter does give quantities for 60 and 61--we also have data for 62. Believe it or not, within an hour of me here in Milwaukee is a 62 tanker that the present owner bought when he was in the military in California in the mid-60's. The tank was no longer present. About 15 years ago, when he "restored" it, I documented that there was no doubt it was an original 300-hp tanker. Since it didn't have the tank when he bought the car, he decided he didn't want the tank, and filled all the holes that would indicate that it was originally so-equipped. Not surprisingly, I tried to talk him out of it--but with no success.- Top

Re: See Below
Joe what year is this car? Thank you to all who responded. Apparently big tank 1960 cars are extremely rare. I still would like to see a picture of both the tank and exterior fuel filler area of a 1960. Does anyone know of one? Thanks again to all.- Top

You can buy Jack's tank or aluminum sbc...
heads for about the same price. Possible discount if you get taken on both.
Any opinions on when the 24 gal fuel fill penetrated the standard door, extending and exposing the fill cap on the exterior of the car...???- Top

Joe, I am confident that the '62 offering was...
...delivered with the fill/cap through the door. (I have owned 4 of those). For '61, I am not quite so sure, though I belive the '61 AIM indicates it should. For '60, I believe the AIM instructs no penetration, however indicates the standard gas cap ears be bent over to avoid interference with the filler door when closed.
As an aside, I think there is an extraordinary temptation on a'61 owner's part to pass through the filler door whether it came that way or not. The 24 gallon cars used a different fill tube so that is an issue to deal with. I believe the '60 mentioned above in this thread did not pass through the door when I saw it being shown.
Bottom line for me is whether the '61's went through or not. I can say that it would probably be difficult to completely fill the tank without the extension and always assumed this was the only reason ZAD made this silly looking modification (that I love)... Of the 4 '62's I have owned w/24 gallon tanks, 2 of the previous owners had shortened the tube and bought a new filler door. At least one of those owners didn't know anything about a special fuel tank - he just thought some wanna be Le Mans racer maroon type thought it would look really cool...- Top

Dennis
Back a year or so ago..when I went to Greenbay to inspect the Muscle Car and Part collection that was for sale..there were two complete 24 gallon fiberglass tanks. One installed in a 57..with the filler tube coming out of the filler door ( with a strange pipe thread end and cap ).
The second tank was on a pallet with its related hold down straps and what appeared to be a real filler neck in the filler door and cap.
Really cool stuff..and yes funky..
I have pictures somewhere.
