I know there has been a lot written on this subject and I did go to the archives first, but has anyone found a source for a temp sensing unit which works properly OUT OF THE BOX without adding resistors to eliminate the high readings? I have a 62 340hp with a new unit which reads about 30 degrees above the values of a direct reading gauge.

Re: 62 340hp Water Temp Sending Unit
Tom,
You probably want a sender manufactured by www.lectriclimited.com. They advertise that their sender is specifically calibrated to be accurate when used with an original gauge. (I bought one a few months ago for my '65 L76, but haven't installed it yet, so I can't yet attest to that statement - maybe others can.) Keep in mind that it isn't represented as being totally correct from a judging standpoint - it lacks the engraved writing (AC - MADE IN U.S.A.) around the underside of the hex surface, and I think the upper lip and black plastic insulator are configured differently. But like you, my first priority was accuracy, and I didn't have a convenient source of N.O.S. or good used parts. You can get it from them or from certain other vendors, assuming they're willing to disclose their source (ask). Good luck!

Yup; there are a LOT of these things still out there. However, as I'm sure you know, one needs to find one from a car that has a temperature gauge and not just a warning light. The 2 units can appear similar but they are not functionally interchangeable. If there's a gauge on the dash, though, the chances are great that it has the sending unit one is looking for.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: IR Reading
Just sent a buch a copy of Temperature sending units that were tested in 04.
The comparison is enlightning. I wanted to know how to hold one in my had and measure the resistance and it work in the car. The resistance plots and data are available.
Send me you E-Mail Address and I will mail you a copy of data and plots.
John - rember seeing them in Knoxville !

You'll get a more accurate reading if you "shoot" the radiator hose just above the thermostat housing, due to its matte surface; if you shoot the housing or intake, a more glossy surface can result in a less accurate IR reading.- Top
