    C1 Hood Support Screws

    Hi all,

I am curious about the correct fasteners for where the hood support connects to the fender for my 1960. I have large Phillips machine screws, the AIM clearly shows a hex bolt of some sort, but I am told they should be clutch. Which are acceptable?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Re:C1 Hood Support Screws(Yes confusing)

    Bob,

I have always been confused also. Maybe this has been discussed before so I may get blown away. No one jumped in here, so here's my take. I did some research this morning.

The 58-60 JM says phillips or clutch, but without washer(?). The AIM part shows 9411553 "SCREW" but pictures a hex "BOLT". I believe it was a case of the right part# but maybe the wrong item drawn. If you notice other drawings of bolts in the AIMs, they are described as "BOLT", not "SCREW". AIM also shows 446188 "P.W."(plated washer) under the "SCREW". Again JM says no washer. This is all very confusing, I agree. BTW, the 61 AIM shows the same screw as the 60 AIM.

Now to make matters more confusing, I own a very original early 62(#483, built apx 9/6/61). The 62 AIM calls out part# 160536 "SCREW" and 446188 "P. WASHER", drawn under the "SCREW". However, there is a note(1 in circle) next to "SCREW". SYM 1 in revision record on the page, on 9-7-61 the revision reads "WAS 9411553 SCREW 39102 BM". My car appears to have untouched lower release hardware(see below). It has CLUTCH head SCREWS, with WASHERS, no washers on nuts. Whatever the change was to the part#, I don't think it's feasible that the change occured on my car as it was built the day before the change was written. I would think it would take some time before the line got the revision. Therefore, if my 62 has the CLUTCH heads, they are likely part# 9411553 "SCREW". If earlier AIMs called out that part#, I'd say they should be CLUTCH. The JM says clutch or phillips. Is it possible the parts bins held either of the 2 types on the line? Possibly. Maybe they had 2 suppliers under the same part number, one philips, one clutch. Who knows.

Below: 3772621 reinforcement under the support. No lock washers under the nuts as in the AIM.

      Rich -

"P. Washer" stands for "plain washer", a/k/a "flat washer"; not a reference to plating.

        Re:P Washer

Ah, yes you're right. I must have been thinking Jaguar, I restore those too. I alternate between 2 forums these days and get my mords wixed a little.:-)
