My shifter assembly is the later version (attached to frame). It really appears to me that the transmision could be removed without the need to remove the shifter assembly from the frame (just disconnect speedometer cable, linkage, and wiring). Is it possible to remove the transmission without removing the shifter assembly in this case? Thanks for your responses and special thanks to those responding to my previous questions on the same subject.

Re: 66-427 trans remove revisited
Thanks Wayne. Just trying not to make more work, goal is to get the Vette back on the road where it belongs ASAP. Only interested in removing the transmission to assist with pulling the drive shaft so I can replace u-joints. The transmission and shifter is fine as is. (Engine is already out at this time) Any trick to aligning linkage / levers when I reassemble the shifter to trans? Thank you for your input.- Top

Remove the transmission to assist with pulling the driveshaft? You need to remove the driveshaft to enable the removal of the transmission, not the other way around. The driveshaft most certainly can be removed without removing the transmission first. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 66-427 trans remove revisited
Joe is right. I dont understand why the trans has to go to take the driveshaft out, unless its got some other driveshaft that is a one piece. But, if the engine is already out, the trans will come out without removing either the driveshaft or the shifter.- Top

Re: 66-427 trans remove revisited
Wayne, Joe, you are correct, the drive shaft will come out without removing the transmission. It just seemed that a few bolts would remove the transmission if I could leave the shifter on the frame. May just pull it to degrease it and change fluid. Thanks for the information.- Top
