    1967 Starter

First, thanks guys for all your previous input. Question: I have a 427/390HP engine assembly, 2-1-67. Block cast 1-24-67. Both Heads 1-17-67. Intake 12-17-66. Carb 12-1966 4th week. I need and found a starter dated 1-25-67. With the starter date being after the block cast date, it seems too early for the car. I sort of envision the block going down the assembly and the GM employees adding parts to the block from their bins. Anyone know if starters were some of the last items put on the car? Do I make any sense? What are your thoughts?

    Brian-----

The folks on the assembly line in Flint, MI (small blocks) and Tonawanda, NY (big blocks) DID emplace various components on the engines as they went "down the line". Starters were not among them, though. Starters were installed at St. Louis. It's very possible for a starter to be dated after the engine assembly date. However, it's generally not possible for an original starter to be dated after the assembly date of the car.

Joe, thanks. You have helped me a few times. I did not know the starter was put on at St. Louis. My engine assembly is 2-1-67. Car assembled 2-13-67. Therefore, a 1-25-67 starter can work for me. The alternator I have is dated 1-28-67. That must have been put on at St. Louis as well along with other ancillary components under the hood. Makes sense. Do you know where the trannys were built? Were they built at the St. Louis plant or elsewhere and then shipped.

        Joe, my apology

It's late. My brain is not working. Of course, manual 4 speed trannys were built in Muncie. 3 speeds in Saginaw. I believe some trannys came out of Cleveland or Toledo. I'm going to bed.

Some early Powerglides were manufactured at Cleveland. Most were manufactured at Toledo, though.

            Brian,

Interesting that your Corvette was assembled on 2-13-67. Mine was assembled one day after, on Valentine's day 1967. Almost all the components on my car that were dated, read either January or February. Some exceptions are the infamous intake manifold thAt falls outside the 6 month window and, I believe, the glass. However, with the exception above, engine components were all dated either A or B.
