Re: C-2 CE BLOCK?? 66 coupe
Many people believe that a CE block has the same status as an NOM (non original motor).
It's very rare to have proof that a CE block presently installed was put there back in the day by the dealer as a direct replacement. It could have been found recently in a junk yard just like any other used engine............- Top

Why install a CE when you can install correct?
I differ with Mike. While is is hard to have proof, who would install an obviously wrong engine when you can find correctly numbers engines too easily.
As to pulling one out of a junkyard, I'd think it would be a rare occurrence simply based on the rarity of the CE stamped engines. The serial is 20,000 to 49,999 for Flint and 50,000 to 79,999 for Tonawanda. That is 30,000 CE Flint blocks and 30,000 Tonawanda blocks. With over a million cars a year produced, 60,000 is a small percentage.
I'd say you have to based whether the CE is really a warranty or not based on the owner, how long he has owned it, the tale he weaves, and so on. Slick Bill at Honest Joe's Corvette Emporium is probably not a good basis. Old Mr. Jones who has had the car since 1975 probably is.
It won't be worth as much as an original engine car, due to the public's demand only for matching numbers, but it the quality is there, should be worth more than the Impala or Chevelle engine dropped in to the spot.

John Hinckley has mentioned time and again how the CE was set up to monitor the 5 year/50,000 mile warranty claims and that they went far beyond what they anticipated, so while some say that a CE could be an over the counter block, I have a gut feeling that they were all being used for warranty claims and not enough were extra for service blocks. Especially since there already were service blocks being sold that were stamped according to the engine.

Some here may remember when the 5/50 warranty program expired and there was no longer any need for the "CE" stamped engines to be in the parts system, they cleaned the parts depots out and made special buys for the dealers, who in turn passed some of the special discount on to the wholesale/retail customer. I believe there were many of these engines left over from the warranty program. I've personally owned three of them that were NOT warranty replacements.- Top
