Opinions on this pad stamp.

Does anyone on this forum, with experience looking at pad stamps, see anything wrong with either of these that would suggest a restamp? I need to know asap... thanks

Here is the other set on pad...this set is out board and vin derivative is inboard...1968 Big Block...lmk asap...thanks

Can't see any broach marks, looks like another number between the 0 and the 7, and between T and 0. Just my old senile eyes" opinion.

I'm no expert but since I've been looking to buy a car like this I've been paying more attention to stamp pads. Obviously it has been double stamped but it looks like it was redone because the first hit wasn't hard enough and not to change it...may be original...or not...

If you use your imagination you can almost make out the odd broach mark in the first pic. What also concerns me is why it is rusted so bad. I've seen a lot of rusty cars with stamp pads way nicer than this one so either he is trying to hide something by "rusting" it or the car is a real rust bucket. My gut feeling is that it is a original pad but the car is a beat up old rust bucket that was patched together a while back. That is just why I started the thread a few days ago, to see if anyone in Cincinnati knew this car and could give me some advice on it but I now see on that thread that you beat me too it and found someone to check it out for you instead...

I beleive what you are seeing are double strikes, which I am told was quite common in practice as they were hastily stamped and the skipping between strikes was not unusual...

It definitely shows a strike bounce or double hit. Using a magnifying glass up against the picture, the broach marks can barely be seen along the outside edge. It appears to be the real thing, however that pad sure has a lot of surface rust. With the amount of rust obliterating most of the pad broaching surface and the double strike bounce (or whatever) it would concern me about the future value of this particular car.

The pad has the bounce or double hit the vin stamp has some numbers in the back and I see some broach marks. If the casting and date are in line it may well be real as most restamps I have seen look real neat with no bounce or numbers in the back ground. I agree about future value and judging issues as an in person look is a much better way to make a call.

Rust is a common thing. The reason many aren't was oil leaks. On most old cars, oil leaks, builds up a glob of oil and dirt that protects the pad.

In a well-cared for car, this pad is kept clean. Then in long term storage, the pad rusts.

I've seen it several times, and always that way. The car just driven and then dropped in a barn for 10 years has a well-preserved pad. The "baby" that somehow gets left in a barn for 10 years ends up rusted.
