Can a vacation get any better than spraying the final coats of Rally Red lacquer? Who needs palm trees and drinks with umbrellas! This might be the year I actually finish this project, but don't hold your breath.

Re: Spraying Color
Don, I'm assuming an HVLP gun was used as overspray seems minimal. What kind of compressor, gun and paint did you use? I have a Polo White paint job coming up and I really want to spray my own as well! Also, what did you use as sealer, primer?
Hope to see finished product!- Top

Re: Spraying Color
Mike,
Yes, the gun is an HVLP. It's a Devilbiss Finish Line 2. I believe it has since been replaced with the FL3. The compressor is from Lowes and is 30 gallon rated at 5.7 SCFM at 90 PSI with a cast iron pump, which is more than adequate. I used PPG DPLF for a sealer; followed by Kondar for block sanding; followed again by DPLF; followed by Duracryl. Good luck with your project!
Lots of color sanding and buffing to look forward to now!- Top

Patience
Don: I'm just one step behind you on my '65 ermine white roadster --getting ready to shoot Duracryl topcoats. Even using the same materials: DPLF, Polyprime catalyzed hi-build, Kondar DZ lacquer primer, DPLF over-reduced for sealer, and now the DDL acrylic lacquer. Also the same HVLP Finishline gun!
To perfect my technique,I used the rear valence and the decklid underside as test pieces. So far so good, they are finished and are way too nice.
Here's the suggestion I would offer you or anyone else shooting lacquer: wait a MONTH before you start with the 1000/1500/2000 color sanding. It's amazing how this material continues to shrink as it gives up the entrapped solvents!! Also, the more fully cured it is -the better results you'll get in compounding & polishing.- Top

Six complete coats?
Don: are you describing a single application with the recommended 50% overlap as TWO coats? If so, I now understand where the 12 coats from 2 gallons of material becomes possible. It's really six complete coats, as most would describe it. Good idea on the extra material over the peaks. I plan to mask the peaks with 1/4" green tape when I compound it. Even seen some of the pros use this insurance.- Top
