    Tom-----

I thought that 88's originally used a master cylinder that was natural aluminum with no paint. 1988 did use a one-year-only master cylinder, but I thought it was natural aluminum just like those prior and those subsequent. Is it possible that the one on the car has been previously rebuilt (and, painted by the rebuilder)?

Tom, I agree that it should be bare aluminum. My May 83 and is bare aluminum. You have snail mail coming. Thanks, John D.

Maybe I can just brush it up. I am going to try a small wire brush. I am almost certain that it is original as the car had only 10k miles and one owner when I bought it, and has 12k now. I never changed it.Thanks for the help. Tom

Tom, been gone for couple of days. The master cylinder and booster on my 88 are Australian made. The reservoir cap is stamped "PBR" and the booster has silver decal with "PBR" too. For cleaning maybe you could remove paint with some lacquer and scrub with some comet cleaner and toothbrush after.

              Bill
My booster and MC both have PBR on them also. i will try some laquer thinner on it and see what happens. I tried wire brusing it and it didn't do much. I am all but positive that it is the original. When I had the car judged at the regional one of the judges commented about it needing to be painted, so I assumed that it was a paint finish, it does look like it . thanks for your help. Tom
