    '62-68(?) alternator diode markings

From an original unrestored 42 amp alternator 1100696 dated 5G7 (July 7th 1965). One of the +ve diodes is shown.

I can see the red ink "380" with date code 5F16 and (thanks to the '65 TIM&JG) the "466" at the bottom.

This is the cleanest of the 6 diodes [3 positive, 3 negative (in black ink)] . I can't make out the script on any of the others.

Is there a way to clean the grime and oxidation to find out what the dates are ? I realize I may destroy the ink in the process, but so be it.

    Wayne,

You might just try with Simple Green but you will run the risk of removing the ink. If you can just get the numbers to show with some dry cleaning, leave them at that state.

I did my 67 alternator case with Eagle etching Mag Cleaner. Although it did a good job on the case, it was impossible to protect the diode ink (even though I tried), the ink came right off. I think it is water soluble, or very susceptible to acid or base cleaning solutions.
