For 1965 models, are the front springs on standard suspension supposed to black or bare metal. The Judging Guuide says they were coated with a rust inhibitor and have a black appearance. What should I use to make them appear black without painting them?

The original springs were unpainted; later SERVICE replacement springs of the original part number (i.e. 3851100) were painted or powder-coated.
I would call the finish on the original springs "natural". This sort of a finish varies from "silvery looking" to a somewhat darker color. I don't think that I've ever seen an original spring from this era that I would call "black" (or, anything even close to black).
I don't know how one could re-create the exact, original appearance of these springs. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 65 Standard front springs
Gene,
On my '67 the restoration of which was completed in January 1984, I bead blasted the front coil springs and coated them with Coricone. They have not yet rusted and, although the color has mellowed to an aged yellowish-brown, can be brought back to bare metal with a laquer dampened rag. BTW, Coricone is a parifin based coating compound that I purchased in sparay cans.
