1962 BW transmission speedo gear housing

Does the tab that holds the speedometer driven gear housing in place in one of these T-10s go straight into the flat in the housing, or does the side of the tab slip into the housing slot? It's a mighty hard place to see and work with in the car!!

narrow(width) end of the rectangular piece of stamped steel goes in the driven gear housing. mike
