Need recommendation for harmonic balancer puller

Can someone recommend a decent quality puller for removing a harmonic balancer? And where to buy it?

And when removing the balancer, is there anything I need to be cautious about in terms of making sure I don't damage anything?

    Thanks,

    Gary

Summit and Jegs have them in their catalogs. Looked pretty good to me. Don't believe Sears has one.

Consider a combination installer/remover. How are you going to get the old balancer or a new one back on?

Check the balancer, and see if you really need a remover. Old ones are so loose now that they can sometimes come off easily, after you remove the bolt, without resorting to a puller.

The harmonic balancer pullers differ from gear pullers in that the 3 prongs have bolts that thread into the 3 pulley holes on the balancer. Gear pullers have prongs that grab the edges. A gear puller may damage a balancer.

      Recommendation for harmonic balancer pull

      Chris,

Thanks for the tips. I'm just going to remove the balancer in order to have it rebuilt by Damper Doctors or Damper Dudes. The engine builder will put it back on when that time comes.

I've already removed the crank bolt and the balancer is not the least bit loose, so I do need a puller.

Gary, do you have an Autozone where you live? They loan tools like this, inventory depends on the local store. You just"buy" it and then return it. They advertise the loaner program on their website. If you have one available, try them unless you think you'll need a puller again in the future.

          Autozone

          Mike,

According to the Autozone.com website, there is a store 4 miles from my house. I've never been to one of their stores, but I'll call and see if they have a puller to loan. That would definitely be my preference as I don't need some of these tools except once.

          Thanks for the tip,

          Gary

              Re: Autozone

I've rented a LOT of stuff from them...it's a good deal, and saves big $$. BTW, Craftsman at least used to make one, because the puller I have is Craftsman.....it's over 35 years old, but hey, it's a Craftsman!!

biggest problem is I keep misplacing them

I now own three or four of them because I keep misplacing them (I think they get borrowed and returned years later ). If you live near Orlando, just contact me and I'll let you borrow one.

                    Autozone - A great recommendation!!!

                    Mike,

Thanks again for recommending Autozone. I went there this morning, got a balancer puller, took it home, pulled the balancer and returned the puller all within 45 minutes. The tool was brand spanking new and it worked perfectly. In my opinion, Autozone is a winner with a system that I didn't know existed anymore.
