    NDB SPEED

John, I sure hate to complain after not having a site for so long ,but the speed of the board sometimes slows to a crawl. It appears to have no rhyme or reason as one post will take over 2 minutes to display and then the next one will pop up in 2 seconds. We appreaciate all the long hours you have put in the system and I'm sure I'm not telling you something that you haven't heard from others.

I notice the same thing. Several posts will come right up then the next one I download seems to take forever. Sometimes, if its more than a few seconds, I stop the transfer and try again and it might come right up. The response speed seems somewhat random - fast, fast ,fast, slow, stop transfer, try again. fast , fast...

I can't figure out if it's the web, my ISP, or the server.

It's become so slow for me that I can't read even half the posts. As I'm writing this, it took about 30 seconds just to get to this screen...5:45 AM East Coast time. Sometimes, it takes minutes...when it gets that slow, I just log off. Chuck

the only way for me to read a post is to refresh, otherwise clicking returns me to the message index. Unable to post at all. Guess this is a test. Spoke to John, seems no one has these type of problems. Checking on my end. Going to switch to a cable modem today. Hope this message posts.

          Deniis,

I have cable modem at home and DSL at work. The cable modem is great between 9am and 5pm, but around 5pm the thing really slows down. I can only attribute that to everyone getting home and logging in. On the other hand my DSL has the same speed all day. I am changing from the cable modem to DSL at home.

Theoretically, the cable modem is faster and at times the download speeds are excellent. At peak hours it is no faster than a 56k modem sometimes and is very frustrating. I would check to see if DSL is available and at equal price to the cable modem. The cable modem is the most cost effective always connected system. Mine was great in the beginning. If you decide on the cable modem don't spend the money on the cable modem. Rent it so you can turn it back in and not spend $300-400. This way you can upgrade to new technology faster.

I'm just spoiled at work. Just my two cents!

              Re: NDB SPEED (long)

              Hi to all:

Just a few comments from my continuous reading of the board, colored by 40 years developing business software for many kinds of computers. All data base systems that continually add records (posts) suffer from gradual degredation because of the additional indexes that must be searched. I make the assumption that the server is reorganized daily. I have noticed that yesterdays posts come up faster than todays posts; that posts way out on the right side are slower than posts under the original topic (its like climbing a tree); and that really old posts are much faster. The only way I can insure I get the post I selected is to leave the cursor on the post until it arrives. If I click and then move the cursor most of the time I will not get the post. I am using IE5 and a local ISP on a dial up line.
