every once in a while when i go to start my car i will get a short sarter engagement then nothing. the guages respond as to presence of power but no click or sound of any kind. when i give it a jump it starts fine yet the battery seems to not be the issue as it will start for days with no issues. i am suspecting the solonoid. it does not seem to be related to hot or cold engine as tonight it happened after it sat for about 3 hours. it has been started with no issues many times since it last happend. it has a 365 original starter in it. it has a new engine harness from Lectric ltd,any ideas?

Re: starter issue on 66 BB?
Starter solenoids wear out with time/use. As they wear the ohmic resistance of electrical contact points in the solenoid increase and symptoms as you describe can develop. The 'fix' is pretty simple. You buy a solenoid rebuild kit and install it OR your disassemble the solenoid (remove the black/brown Bakelite cover) and buff up the contact points using a wire brush + remove and rotate the main solenoid power stud 90-degrees to use the unused side of the brass stud.
If you take the route of cleaning and re-using your solenoid's existing contact components, you 'can' be good to go for another +40K miles, but a solenoid rebuild kit is pretty cheap....
Also, if you drop the starter to remove the solenoid, why not take the opportunity to install a starter rebuild kit? The whole works is something like a $25 expense with a Bluestreak kit...- Top
