    1972 LT-1 with a/c info

    Hello,
I'm looking at purchasing this LT-1 and would like any helpful information from the experts here on the forum about this type of car. The car appears to be a mostly original 56,000 mile car. I have been told that the 72's are fairly easy to identify because the engine type is included in all the vin numbers which makes these cars harder to fake.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

Yes, the engine type was coded into the VIN sequence for the first time for the 1972 model year. This was just about the time that it really didn't matter too much, anymore. Anyway, the FIFTH character should be an "L" if the car is an original LT-1. It is very difficult to change this since any change in the fifth character changes the VIN which, then, will not match the ownership certificate. You can't just go down to the DMV and ask them to change the ownership certificate to match a "revised" VIN. However, there are still ways of doing it if one has the knowledge and inclination. So, you can't be 100% sure if the "characters come up right". Still, it does provide a powerful tool that folks of just about every model year prior to 1972 wish they had going for them.

          Joe,
Thanks for the response. The car seems to have all the right stuff and the current owner is a standup guy. The car is a Elkhart Green coupe with saddle interior. It is complete with smog and a/c units working as they should. All the vin numbers and date codes match up. It just doesn't have a trail of orignal owner docs. I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can before I write the check.

              Thanks Dick,
Is there anything else I should look for when inspecting this car?
