    I am going to have my 58 Corvette NCRS judged this year.Last week I bought from Coker Tire Co. a new set(five) of Firestone "Deluxe Champion"($625.95)6.70X15" with 2 1/4" whitewalls.When I went to put the spare tire in the trunk well, the spare tire board would not sit all the way down (it's high) in the groove.Is this the way the spare tire board sat(high)coming from the factory in 1958?The tire is the correct size as in the judging manual.

      No, when factory new, the spare tire cover sat flush with the floor of the trunk. You'll find that ALL tires made today exhibit this 'funny'. The cause is today's manufacturing process to meet DOT requirements.

      Tires are test inflated while still hot from the mold and the sidewall geometry 'bulges' slightly in comparison to non-DOT originals. You'll find prior threads on this in the archives.

      You either live with the modest difference, seek a non-DOT tire to use as a spare, or intentionally under-inflate the DOT based spare...

          Marc,

          As Jack mentioned, this is the best fit that you will get with the current repro tires. There are no point deductions for the spare tire board not being flush and the trunk mat cover up these irregularities.
