Help with my Tank Sticker Dealer Code

With the help of a fellow NCRS member (Thanks Al!) I was able to determine that the dealer code on my tank sticker, which appears to be 385, corresponds to Jim Marre Motors, 116 South Fifth Street, Petersburg, Illinois 62675. There does not appear to be a current listing for the dealership on Super Pages.com

Has anyone ever heard of this dealership or know what became of it?

Re: Help with my Tank Sticker Dealer Code

Here's a quote I found from the data base of another dealer code website.

"Tank sticker from my recently purchased 1967 roadster indicates zone 13 dealer 385 as original delivering dealer. Recently located and spoke with the original owner who ordered and took delivery of the car and he verified that Hallman Chevrolet of Johnstown, Pa. was the selling dealership."

Dealer Code - Petersburg, IL - Jim Marrie

Petersburg is a city in Menard County, Illinois, on the bluffs and part of the floodplain overlooking the Sangamon River. The population was 2,299 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Menard County. Petersburg is located approximately two miles north of New Salem, the original settlement where Abraham Lincoln first settled when he came to Illinois.

I talked with Doug at Nichols User Cars there. He did the service work for Marrie (Pronounced MAR-A") after the last of his three service workers left. Marrie only had one service person for the two years prior to closing. Doug says the place has been closed since 1986.

Mr. Marrie came in from Chicago about 1970 something, buying out "Seillings - Mitchell Chevy".
It was always a very small shop, and the buildings are gone now. Address was somewhere in the 100 block of 5th street, right by the courthouse. (No Chevy dealership in town since 1986.)

Doug remembers a 1978 pace car, and may be able to tell you more.

Note that I didn't know Doug before you asked about this place. That's an example of the power of the internet. This took about 10 minutes to do, and I now have a new friend somewhere in IL. He wants me to stop at his place when I get to Petersburg!

Some of the information can be recorded with the zone and the dealership number on ncrs.org. Lemme know if you want help with that.

Pittsburgh, PA zone (13) vs. Pittsburg, IL

Since Greg didn't indicate a zone, I assume he's talking about the right place (in Petersburg, IL).

That would not be in the Pittsburgh, PAzone (13). Please share the web address for the site you were looking at.

        In any case, see below...

Re: Help with my Tank Sticker Dealer Code

Sorry...the dealer code could be 395 or 396...the last digit is hard to read...the member wo emailed me had the dealer info on 396 but not 395...I am hoping to find out where the car originated from through a prior owner to help determine which dealer it is...thanks for the help...

Re: Help with my Tank Sticker Dealer Code

To sort this out accurately you need to tell us what Zone the dealer was in. Those are the first 2 digits of the entire dealer code 5 digit number. There were many dealers numbered 395 spread thruout the zones.

OK, the Zone code is 47 and the dealer code looks very much like 395...what does it mean?

Re: Help with my Tank Sticker Dealer Code

I believe someone else answered your question about MARRIE Chev. Many small dealers went under, when the interest rates were high in the early 80's. At one time Chevrolet wanted a dealer in every town no matter the size. That dealer was one that didn't survive. If you have an actual tank sticker with this information, contact Al Grenning and he might have a cross reference. He advertises in the DRIVELINE. He'll typically provide the info free for a copy of an original tank sticker.

                        Greg,

We were just in Petersburg this past Friday (June 1st). We took out grandkids to New Salem to see Abe Lincoln's place. Petersburg is West-Northwest of Springfield a short distance. We live in Shelby Co. about an hour or so East of Springfield.
