Re: Corvette @ LeMans
Too bad the article didn't mention the competition, but my understanding is that Aston Martin has a full factory supported team - at least two cars. Plus there are some privateers entered.
As with any endurance race, a slight difference in qualifying or best lap time doesn't mean much. The key is good preparation and good luck. The Corvette team is superbly prepared, but luck is ephermeral.
Last year the Astons were faster, and both teams had bouts of bad luck, but in the end Aston's bad luck was a little worse than Corvette's bad luck, so Corvette won.
This year is a whole new race. It's nice to see that the Corvettes can lap as fast or a little faster than the Astons, but it will come down to relative good and bad luck. Even something like a tire puncture on course can make a difference between winning and runner-up.

Luck AND skill...
Last year, one of the Astons came into the final turn before the straight-away to the start/finish line and lost it COMPLETELY bouncing from wall to wall and losing its LF wheel. This happened DIRECTLY in front of Corvette Corner (the section of the track where GM France hosted us...
Most of the others missed the episode because they'd walked to the grandstand area to observe the official start of the race. But, a few of us 'lazy' Yanks who'd stayed at Corvette Corner observed the spin-out/crack-up very nicely from the antique, French, double deck bus GM France positioned track side as a viewing platform.
Yes, luck does play a role, but it's also a matter of driver skill, pit crew skill and the underlying soundness of the cars that compete. LeMans is a real test and I'll enjoy it again this year as I did last year...- Top
