    1967 EXHAUST PIPES SURFACE RUST

MY EXHAUST PIPES CONTINUALLY HAVE SURFACE RUST. IS IT A BIG NO NO TO GO STAINLESS STEEL FROM A JUDGING STANDPOINT?? IS THERE A WAY TO CLEAN THE CURRENT PIPES SO THE RUST DOES NOT CONTINUE TO BUILD UP SO QUICKLY??

Almost anything strong enough to remove the rust will cause it to re-rust even faster. Try one of the "goo be gone" type products. It will remove light, surface rust and not inhibit further rusting.

It's not a 'no no' to use SS exhaust components, but when you read the NCRS Judging Reference Manual, Standard Deductions, section you'll see there are substantial scoring deductions mandated for SS components with the point loss varying with the number of SS components used...

Aluminized is a good alternative to plain carbon steel; it costs a few points, but doesn't rust, and you don't take the 50% points hit you get with stainless steel.

          Hi John:

I can't seem to locate my copy of the JRM, but I thought that in the list of mandatory deductions there was a 50% originality deduction for stainless steel or for aluminized. Am I remembering this incorrectly?

            I don't believe that it's a full 50% for aluminumized.
