I have a '71 two-seventy horse AC automatic. I would like to find out if anyone knows the proper old part number for the radiator cap. Thanks in advance Jerry 29342

Re: Part Number Needed
Jerry-----
Radiator caps are one of the "enigmas" of the Corvette parts world; it seems that even GM was never completely sure which cap was correct for which application. Certainly, there is ambiguity and incorrect information in every Corvette parts manual ever printed. In any event, here's the story:
The assembly line radiator cap for all 72 applications except those with aluminum radiators (base engine with manual trans and w/o A/C, ZR-1) was GM #861042 and this cap was also known as AC RC-15. It was never available in SERVICE, though, under the assembly line part number.
The original SERVICE part number for this 1972 radiator cap was GM #6410456, which was also known by its Delco parts system designation of AC RC-15. As far as what the differences were between the GM #861042 and the GM #6410456, I couldn't tell you for sure. But, I strongly suspect that there were no differences, at all.
The current SERVICE replacement part number for 1972 applications without aluminum radiator is GM #861050, which currently GM lists for $8.84. The cover of this cap is different than the original in that it is constructed of stainless steel material and the finger-hold "ears" are smaller. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Part Number Needed
Thanks for the response, Joe. But do the part numbers hold true for 1970 and early 1971? I'm trying to take care of all these little nit-picking details before July nationals. Your help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you, Jerry 29342- Top
