    63 triva revisited

Just a note to inquire about a ground strap that is on my 63 FI car that is a FEb-Mar car. Engine build date is 2-11. Ground strap I am referring to is the one connected to the acclerator lever. The wide wide strap.
The aims does not show any type washer for this strap. Refer to Sect U65 Sheet 5.00 titled Radio-ground straps. Bottom right hand corner. Says ground strap held on with screw. Doesn't say anything about an outside star washer being used. I realize and can plainly see that in other instances on this page the ground straps have the "typical" star washer. In these cases the assembly procedure is a 121763 star washer, strap, and then the screw. But to repeat the wide ground strap for the accelerator lever does not use this. Now maybe St. Louis didn't follow this. I don't know. Your thoughts please.
Meanwhile I have no idea in the world what the judging manual says on this subject. Just referring to the AIMS for my source for this instance. Thanks, John

Rick, Now I know why you blew the PV. Radio didn't work.
      Thanks for answering the question.!!!!
Tell CC my 63 is being PVed in one hour. If it makes it off the trailer into garage in one piece it passed. If it don't(doesn't) it failed. Meanwhile my AM rdaio works real good. Have an extra if you want one for your car. Guess the owner couldn't afford one since he wasted so much money on the big gas can. Today though who can fill one of those things up?
Any more questions? Back to work. JD

        John,

Going from memory but I am almost certain that my early 63 did NOT have a star washer at this location and I remember thinking about that when I took the bolt out. There was the remains of the groung strap terminal but no star washer and if I am remembering correctly the bolt did not have any markings on the head. My 67 has a star washer but it's just under the bolt head and I don't think anyone has been there before me. The 1967 AIM shows a star at this location but installed as you suggest in your post.

No star washer or signs of one on my Oct 62 built coupe.

Tim, Thanks for your imput. Yesterday Bill Clupper mentioned that the star washer was used in varioius places because it could be used directly over a painted surface so as when installed the teeth actually bite or bit thru the paint therefore a good ground.
Basically the washer is used in painted areas and yukky areas according to Mike Hanson. The accelerator rod area is a plated area and bare aluminum. It would have been a good idea to use a washer but not original.
I found out that the a repro wide ground strap can effect your idle cause they are sooo rigid that they don't flex easily enough when accelerating, etc.
You have to do a bollard on them. John

Now I see why I got a ding on the ground strap cable for no star washer. I guess I should read the manual. My fault."A recessed hex-hed bolt with an external tooth washer attaches the ground strap to the accelerator lever end. The same intake manifold bolt that secures the left side distributor shield support bracket secures the ground strap at the other end." Doesn't say anything about a star on the intake bolt though. So I was 1/2 correct. Thanks for the imput guys. John
