    Body paint judging question

Several years ago a new paint deduction for any painting other than "factory" was instituted. I want to make sure I understand it correctly. My car has a hood stripe on it that it should not have-not a BB hood. So I would loose all "Body paint originality-points (45) and body paint condition-points (40)for a 85 point deduction, but I would not loose the "Body color originalty 85 points- no condition points in this catagory. I looked this up in the archives, but I would like a judge to confirm my interpatation of the rule.
I have not had my car judged since 2003 and was thinking about entering it again. Back then I lost 25 points for the hood being striped. Its ironic that I can have the wrong hood on the car, painted the same color but no stripe and now loose only 26 points. Rules are rules and I accept that.

    Re: Body paint judging question

The deduction for hood stripe is related to and taken in Body Color not Body Paint. These two areas are often confused, but ultimately easy to understand.

From the paint judging standard Body Color “Deduct 100% of Originality – Color of side panel cove depression, hood stinger, and/or hardtop is a non-factory color, an unavailable factory color combination or is applied in an inappropriate year of manufacture.” These are body color issues, ultimately in this case the deduction is the same as you have described except all 85 points are originality there are no condition points assigned to Body Color.

A word of caution with respect to paint, you could still loose additional points in the Body Paint section. From the paint judging standard Body Paint “No Originality Deduction - The body paint is the original factory applied finish or appears to have been refinished with the appropriate factory applied material and appears consistent with factory application methods. Judge Condition separately."

Obviously these are short sections from the paint judging standard deductions in our Judging Reference Manual, the complete write up is two pages long. I have taken only short sections from it to assist with the answer to your question.

      Roy, again please.

The car has always judged well. The color of the car is correct and the small block hood is correct except for a blue stripe. I looked up the ruling in the archives that you put out several years ago, so would I only loose 85 point? That is how I interpided the ruling. I think that is what you said as long as the car is the original color per tag. I just want to be sure before I waste my time or any judges time that it would be a 85 total point hit.
