What does the transmission tunnel insulator look like? Is it a metal shield? I ordered a new one from one of the Corvette parts places and I got a piece that is formed to fit on the underside of my floor. It is made out of some type of foam that will not burn. It then has a aluminum foil over that. Is this correct? Or was the original ones a metal shield? A photo of a correct tranny tunnel insulator would help.

Ken-----
The original insulator was generally as you described. It was GM #3834984. That insulator was discontinued from SERVICE in 1971 and replaced by the GM #3912670. The latter was the 1968+ insulator and it's virtually the same as the earlier.
The 3912670 was discontinued a few years ago. However, the GM piece sold for many years were not exactly like the originals or older SERVICE pieces. On the originals and older SERVICE pieces, the aluminum foil was wrapped around the bottom edges of the insulator and no yellow, core insulating material could be seen. The later SERVICE pieces, and perhaps later C3 PRODUCTION pieces, too, did not have the foil wrapped around the bottom edges.
I don't know what the reproduction pieces are like.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Ken....I have an NOS insulator that I bought in the mid '70's. After I got it for my early '63 I found that they were'nt used until later production. I can't post a pix on this forum (don't know how) but could Email a pix if it would help...Regards Frank- Top
