64 SB - Plugging carb heat holes

I am in the process of plugging the carb heat holes in the intake manifold on a '64 327/300 with Carter AFB and have a question about the plugs. I have steel expansion plugs that are sold as 7/16" (I measure them to be .478" OD or 15/32"). I measure the holes to be .447" ID or say 7/16". When I place a plug on the hole in the manifold. the plug barely enters the hole. Having zilch experience with installing these small diameter plugs, I wonder how much will the plug will compress when hammered into the hole. Am I on the right track sizewise for hole vs. plug? Thanks.
    Best regards,
    Charlie

I generally thread them and use an allen set screw to fill the hole.

      Charlie-----

Usually, these plugs have a slight taper. In other words the OD at the bottom of the plug will be slightly less than the OD at the top of the plug. The plugs are designed to slightly compress as they are driven into the holes. You need to use a steel punch or drift that has a diameter about the same as the ID of the plug at the bottom. Then, just drive the plug in.

If you are talking about the hot slot

        Charlie,

Take a look at this post:

On a 67, I used a 7/16" bolt as a punch to tap in the freeze plugs. Might not be the same as your 64, but for whatever it is worth.

        See you in Boston?
