    1972 rally wheel question

I have 6 rally wheels, all of which I have been told are "original." However, two are slightly different than the others. All have the proper AZ manufacturer code, and all have production date stamps near the valve stems. The puzzle is, 4 of the wheels have a small piece of metal, resembling the end of a spring pin "welded" to the rim. It is very small, only about 1/8 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch tall. The other two are smooth. Which ones are original and which ones are not? Thanks for your help in advance.

The 4 with the "welded lump" you described are likely the originals. This feature of earlier C3 wheels was done so that the wheels could be better "matched" to the tires (i.e. the heavy point of one matched to the light point of the other). However, not all original wheels have this feature, so it's possible that all 6 of the wheels are 1972 originals.

The weld was on wheels as late as wheel date 6-14-71.
This wheel came off an early production '72 and was the spare. The wheels with date of 6-14-72 do not have this weld. What is the assembly date of your car?

The assembly date is, of all dates, 9/11/71. So I'm guessing the ones with the welds are the originals. Thanks for the replies.
