Corvette is runner up at Lemans 2007

The #63 Corvette C6R driven by Fellows/O'Connell/Magnussen finished second in class, two laps behind the GT1 class winning #009 Aston Martin DBR9 driven by Brabham/Rydell/Turner, which completed 342 laps. The #008 DBR9 (Bouchut/Gollin/Elgaad) was third in GT1 a lap behind the #63 Corvette.

The last hours of the race were marked by rain and cold temperatures with the field paced by a safety car for much of the time.

The #64 Corvette driven by Beretta/Gavin/Papis dropped out after only a few hours with a broken driveshaft.

The GT1 cars were very reliable with 14 of 16 starters finishing the race including all six DBR9s, four of the five Corvettes, and both Saleens. The other GT1 retirement was the Lamborghini Murcielago, which only lasted a couple of laps, and all other classes saw higher attrition rates. Only two of the 11 LMP2 cars finished.

The #1 Audi R10 diesel (Beila/Pirro/Werner) won the race and LMP1 completing 369 laps.

Correction: The safety car left the track with 12 minutes to go. Fellows managed to unlap himself in the heavy rain and finished 6:08 behind the Aston Martin, but on the same lap.

Rumor has it that Ron will will be retiring at the end of the season.

Poor old Ford...they invest all that money, and just when they've sold a big part of their stake, the Brits start winning.

I hate to see Ron Fellows go, but everyone has to know when to fold'em. My recollection is that the name, Ron Fellows, and Corvette racing success were synonymous. May he have a long and satisfying retirement.

The radio Lemans guys interviewed him after a night stint. He said he's had a couple of shoulder surgeries (not sure if these are related to racing or other causes), and it gets a little tougher every year.

He's probably spent more seat time in a racing Corvette than any other driver, and he will be long remembered as both a great Corvette driver and fan and a true gentleman.

I had the pleasure of chatting with him for about 5 minutes at Long Beach this year. Interestingly he was NOT driving one of the C6-Rs in the ALMS race, but one of the Cadillacs in the Speed GT race, for which I chided him.

He was really looking forward to Lemans - ESPECIALLY a win!
