    C2 - '63 Transmission

    Hi,

I have experienced a small problem with the 4speed in my '63.
On at least 3 occasions when riding down a somewhat steep hill in 2nd gear, the shifter pops out of gear into neutral. This seems to happen when I am off the gas.

Any ideas as to what problem I might be having with the tranny and what remedy I might be looking at?

    Thanks!
    Syd

That's usually indicative of a worn synchronizer assembly, but you should check the shift linkage adjustment to be sure it fully engages second gear.

Assuming the linkage adjustment is okay, you can compensate by holding your hand on the shifter to keep it from popping out on overrun. It will continue to get worse, but you can slow down the wear by double clutching downshifts.

At some point as wear increases it will grind on upshifts or downshifts that aren't perfectly double clutched to match revs, and at that point the transmission will need to be overhauled.

      Thanks Duke.

I will have the linkage adjustment checked out.
The transmission does not grind at all and the only times that this has occurred is when I am rolling down a steep hill.

Chances are you have an earlier 63 that has a Borg-Warner T-10 in it--they are famous for that. Duke's right on, as usual, with his advice. Until it gets a lot worse, I wouldn't worry about it--just be ready to compensate for it. If you're one that has to have it perfect, there are rebuilders who can rectify that--not cheaply. It entails parts replacement as well as removal from the car.

          Thanks Mike.

My '63 is a mid-May (15th) car and I believe it is supposed to have a Muncie but yes, it does have a T-10. I suspect that it might not be original as I have never seen the serial number on it.

I'll compensate for now and have the linkage checked.

If the T-10 is not original to the car, a '63 Muncie will likely be less costly as well as more correct for about the cost of the parts and labor to successfully rectify the problem with the T-10, and less prone to future problems in the future.

Syd....my T-10 did the same thing many years ago and after talking to a transmission guy, he told me to put a shim next to the needle wafer bearing which he gave me from a Turboglide tranny. I did have to make the inside diameter a little larger tho. Been fine ever since......Regards Frank
