Where is the red wire from the Pertronix module connected? It needs a full 12 volts to work properly, especially at high rpm. The coil needs resistor-reduced power, but the Pertronix module does not.

This coil was a new flamethrower from about 3 years ago, if it is bad, what would make it go bad, a bad ballast resistor???

Jim -

Check with Pertronix on your Flamethrower coil - I don't know about the ones they made years ago, but the current Pertronix Flamethrower coil requires a full 12 volts for proper operation.

I have the red on full 12 volts and the coil on the resisted side (reading 9+ volts) I just put in a new coil and still acting up. If it was just bogging down I would take the carb apart and check the floats and needle seats (I want to lean up the jets a tad anyway) but it's the popping out the exhaust like u-burnt fuel which tells me timing agin, or a new bad coil that I can't get my money back for? Maybe it is the Petronics unit and I need to replace that, I just hate to keep replacing things and wasting money, plut that is not a good way to fix things, I'd rather be able to figure it out logically... (intentional pause waiting for female response...) Frustration level HIGH!

A cheap easy check of the Pertronics unit is to install points and condenser.

Always carry points, condenser and tools to make the change over in case it fails.
