My buddy Mike just had his engine done over in his 54 vett and after the engine gets hot .... after a long ride etc his engine doesn't start, he gets a slow turning like it wants to turn over but won't. When the engines cold he has no problem starting it, he has changed out the starter 2 times now thinking that was the problem but it's not that...ideas?

Re: hard starting after engine heats up on "54"
I should add he has checked all the cables including the ground...added a new 800 amp cold cranking battery...rebuilt the starter 2 times as stated already....he's beginning to think maybe a timing issue? all he has to do is take it for a short ride and it won't turn over if he shuts it off. he has to wait some time before it will start again..like an hour or so?- Top

Re: How many miles on the rebuild?
The engine was rebuilt with somewhere around 40,000 miles on it. Since the rebuild my friend had put less than 250 miles on it and the cam when on him so he had to rebuild it again. Since this second rebuild he has put 150 miles on it.- Top

Re: How many miles on the rebuild?
Sounds like tight rings in the cylinder walls to me Gary.
If everything else appears ok such as timing, temp, oil pressure, etc, it could just be that he has to put more road time on the power plant to work the rings and "other" fresh components in a tad more.
He should rent/buy an I.R. gun to confirm that the temperature gauge is accurate as well. Could be that the mill is running hotter than it should contributing to the heat soaking issue.
Just my two pennies worth,

Re: How many miles on the rebuild?
Roy suggested a grounding problem is most likely the cause, while i suggested to my friend he find out exactly where the grounding wires are running and make sure they are grounded in the right locations as well as checking for painted connection surfaces as Roy suggested also. I directed/linked Mike to this forum too so he can follow any other advise to help him with his problem...thanks all for your experience and knowledge.- Top

Re: How many miles on the rebuild?
Roy suggested to look for painted surfaces "like the starter solenoid to starter housing) starter housing to trans adapter" is it possible that the starter was not grounded properly after the rebuild? Can someone tell the exact/proper grounding areas for the starter? "starter housing to trans adapter" is this saying the starter housing has to be grounded to the/a transmission adapter?- Top

I think Chuck has the right idea. If your buddy rebuilt the engine himself, did he check the butt gap on the rings?? The assumption is that the rings often need to be gapped (filed) properly so that thermal expansion will not cause the rings to completely close during normal (and even excessive) operating temps. If the gap goes to zero, then it's possible that the rings will expand into the cylinder walls to produce increased friction beyond what the starter can handle until the temp subsides and the rings shrink. I don't know of an easy way to test this theory unfortunately.
