This post is informational only. Thanks to all that offered thoughts on the original post.
The original post a few weeks ago stated: "..I was driving about 25 mph coming into a corner when I heard a loud pop...hard push to the right... almost hit the neighbor's mailbox. Now, in corners anything above 20- it gets really squirrelly. "
I finally got time to tear the whole rear out of the car this weekend. Upon removing the rear end, the driver's side rear crossmember mounting plate had completely broken off of the frame!! So, when cornering, the entire rear end would shift. Only by the grace of God did this happen while cornering at 25mph and not 75mph otherwise I might not be here to type this.
My theory how this might have happened (unless this is common to C2s) is this: This car was hit hard in the driver's side rear. It was fixed ok - but still has evidence of prior damage on the bottom side. I believe this accident may have stress fractured the plate. Over the past 30 years (I have that much owner history with no accidents - barring face-to-face lying) this stress fracture continued to get bigger and bigger, until final failure. You can tell the last piece holding it in place (fresh metal) was less than 1/2".
I thought I would pass this info along so those restoring frames or pulling cars out of barns (like this one) to inspect this area. It really could have been bad news.
Now, I've got to get this fixed.... Again, thanks for all the input on the original post!
