I am out of town and do not have access to my books. However, I inquired about a 1966 covertible currently on ebay that was built sometime in November of 1965 with an IP block code. Owner states that it is a 450hp car because the early 427/425s were 450hp but GM dialed them back for insurance purposes. I have never heard this and of course he says he has no documentation.

Re: 1966 450hp?????
The story is generally true, except that the only thing dialed back was the decal on the air cleaner and the advertising. there is not a single part of the engine that changed from the 450 hp to the 425hp engine in '66 other than the decal on the air cleaner and the advertised HP. Yes, GM was feeling the heat from the insurance industry and the safety lobby, and they decided to tone down the advertising. The actual car was unchanged. I beleive the change was made in the 3000-4000 serial number change, which would be a little early for a November car, but it is actually irrelevent as the change was meaningless in real terms.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: the insurance companies would not insure
dealers were told to over lay the 450 hp decal with 425 whenever possible I.E during warranty and sevice work, from what i have read. i have an article on this in my collection. nov is way too late to be a 450 car. i have a nov 23rd L72 car in the 6K numbers.i believe it was in the 3000's or low 4000's when the change was made.- Top
