    JERRY LUCKS CARB PROBLEM

My Q-jet (7040207) arrived from Jerry Luck the other day .The problem is that the carb looks so good I'm reluctant to install and hide it under the air cleaner. I was told his work was excellent. I'd say incredible.Want to thank Jerry Clark for all his input

I do have a question about my choke.I set the choke rod top even with the bottom of the hole in the lever. Also, bottomed the lower end of the rod against the choke coil stop before setting the top. It seems that the coil never retracts enough to pull the lower end of the choke rod to the stop.

Therefore when attempting to start the car cold, the choke doesn't close and the car just cranks. If I manually close the choke the car starts right up. Believe I have the correct choke and coil (maybe not), and I know its not the function of the carb. Any advice? Thanks, Dennis

As far as I know the choke coils are identical, but the choke rods differ. You might consider checking which one you have.

      '70 Choke Rod Source?

Dennis, Welcome to the "I have a 70 with the wrong choke rod club." Hee hee. I graduated form the "I have a 70 with the wrong carb carb" into this fine club. I've got the same exact problem. The rod I have (same 7040202 carb BTW) is totally straightened out and it could still use a smidge more length. So far I have been unsuccessful at locating a 70 choke rod... and for that matter the vacuum advance line from the front of the cab! If you or someone happens to know of a source for them, PLEASE let me know. BTW, I have a '70 350/500 AT w/ AC. Thanks! ~Juliet

DUH, I read your carb # Wrong Dennis. I have the same problem. DIfferent '70 carb though (I have 7040202). That's what I get for trying to read Numbers on the board before I've finished my AM Diet Pepsi. ~Juliet

          Hi Juliet:

I would be interested in buying your 70 , 350 / 500, these are among the rarest of all Corvettes and I am aware you will be asking the moon and stars. I just couldn't help it.

Aw gee Jerry, Can't I screw up in peace this morning? I'd love to buy my 350/500 too! LOL! That'll teach me to check the NDB in the AM instead of in my usual night owl mode! ~Juliet

              Re: JERRY LUCKS CARB PROBLEM

I had a similar problem and finally a friend was able to check in another identical carb and take an inprint of the rod shape. Probably the problem is in the rod, as different carbs use different gaskets (eg 203 and 503 use different thick gaskets for base manual cars). You have a 202, different than my 503 (California) so first try to find the numbers (others will help...) to know the correct rod.

Agree with you about the JL carb. When you get it you want to put it in a display, not in the engine...

                Re: follow-up

Thanks for all the input.I don't think I explained quite right.

When I set the choke rod by the book, I don't believe the choke coil pulls the rod down to the coil stop.I can take the choke rod out of choke lever(top) and the rod is still not pulled to the coil stop (bottom )I did replace the choke coil. Seems the coil isn't winding enough for the rod to close the choke blade. Think the coil is temp sensative. Going to try freeze spray on the coil to see if it closes the choke. If so, I'll replace the coil with one that's more sensative to cold. Wonder if the coil is still available from GM ?(Joe). The rod I have is from paragon. Said to be for my eng/carb. Dennis

I have benn looking for a used, NOS or repro. tube for my '70 350/350 for 9 years with no luck. I fabricated one form a Dr. Rebuild 427/390 one that looked similar. Only the NCRS knows for sure!

Dennis, try Paragon for the choke coil (PR-2304 for 70 SB). They have it available. I had the same problem with my 66 BB and the coil helped. It's still not exactly right but I need to adjust a bit. The origianl coil looks just fine but it doesn't work. The new one is great.

                      regards

I understand that the "Good Doctor" is looking for one, good, known original tube for this 1970 application. Once he finds one, they will multiply like rabbits and populate the entire earth.

I eagerly await the day for the "Good Doctor" to breed these tubes! I agree with your analysis of His operation. I always fill out the order form, and FAX it in. I don't think I have ever had any problems with shipment or delivery. I guess as long as you don't have to talk to him you won't have problems!
