I can't get the correct bushings for my 69 big block.I find that they are to tall for the frame u clamp. Can any one shed some light on where I can get them?
I was told that I have to cut them down to fit.Can anyone advise me ?
The bushings are designed to compress down into the retainer. You may need to use longer bolts for the initial installation and then change them one at a time after you have the bushing fully compressed (or, just leave the longer bolts where they are; they won't hurt anything).
I've not done it on the rear within a time frame I can remember. However, I've done it several times on the front which use a virtually identical set-up. In fact, the "U" brackets are the same, front and rear. The bushings are different due to the difference in size of the front and rear bars (i.e. hole size in the bushing).
The first time I did it (YEARS ago) I just couldn't believe that the bushing would compress into the bracket. But, it did. However, I have no way of knowing if the bushings you have are correct in every way. However, if you have bushing GM #481432, that is the SERVICE bushing which GM says is correct for the application.
The bushings MUST compress tightly around the bar in order for the system to be functional.
