    Blue inspection sticker removal

I am at the point of refinishing the doors on my 69 coupe. Is there a way to safely remove the blue inspection sticker from the driver door, and then reattach after the door is repainted? Thanks for the help. Mark

    Re: Blue inspection sticker removal

Mark, I removed the label from my 69 door several years ago and if memory serves me correctly, the label itself has no adhesive, however, it has a clear overlay which does have adhesive with the edges of the overlay adhering the label to the door. Mine is still in perfect condition. There is someone on eBay selling replacement labels with new overlays. I contacted him and was able to acquire what appears to be a very nice replica of the original overlay, way better than anything else I could find that would give a factory looking appearance.

My experience is it's next to impossible to remove the certification label without destroying it...that's the bad news. The worse news is that a recent thread discussed the available repros and how they judged. From that discussion, I now believe that a knowledgeable judge can spot one of those ebay repros from several feet. If you want a close appearance it will work; if you're having it judged, don't be surprised if they pinch you for the label.

If I had it to do over, I would probably leave the original label if it were in good condition, and try a tricky procedure of masking the label, painting the door jamb, then removing the tape while the paint is still fresh and using some thinner to feather the masking line.

I spent some time with a new razor blade cutting the paint away from the metal so the label with some paint on it came off in a condition good enough I thought to get more points than a repo. I trimed the old overlay edge off the sicker and installed it over the new paint with a new overlay. I had bought a repo but installed the original as the repo was not close to correct in any way.

I appreciate the info. It seems I have two choices. Go with a substandard reproduction tag, or leave the original tag on the door, and do a substandard job of refinishing the door. In my opinion, it would be better if NCRS would allow removal and preservation of the tag for verification purposes, and allow the door to be refinished properly. To me this makes sense from a restorers point of view. Mark

Mark, Another option is to have the decal properly reproduced. Not that difficult you know with the right connections. First get a high power digital and take close up shots of the label installed. Now take some careful measurements and make up a sketch. Then take it to a good print shop and let them take it from there. Remember though that it is illegal to have decals reproduced unless you are licensed. But I bet you are going to be completely satisfied when the project is done although it may take some time to break even. You could end up being the sole source of these. John

You could go to a hobby shop and get a small bottle of liquid masking (mine is a light Blue, Brand name of Parma. #701). paint on about 3 thin coats.

                  Mark,
Go to a hobby store and get a solvent called Bestines. This stuff works miracles on dissolving adhesive. It dries quickly, like lighter fluid, and does not damage anything.

Get an eye dropper and peel back a small corner of the overlay...then start feeding the solvent into the peeled corner and pull slowly as you sqeeze the dropper and feed the solvent behind the peeled corner...it will come off in one piece and then use the solvent on a rag to remove any residue off the tag and door...the stuff is amazing...

Hi Mark,I've done this a couple of times with my 74'Z/28 and a DUSTER 340. I used a new sharp OLFA type blade out of the holder, and did it on a hot day so the sun was on the open door. Gently, and very time consuming (almost an hour) get behind the decal and it should come off perfect. REMEMBER THIS: these decals were made to come apart if anyone tried to mess with them (stop fraud) so be patient and TAKE YOU TIME!

                    Ken.

                      Re: Blue inspection sticker removal

Mark, due to my computer breaking last year and currently having another, the contact information is gone. I occasionally see the blue labels listed on ebay. I took a quick look today but couldn't find a listing.
I see some others had a more difficult time removing the label than I did. The paint on my door was original and might have had something to do with that.
Perhaps if someone else knows where on ebay to find the label, they can give you a link which will have the person's contact info. If I see it again, I'll let you know.
