    Clutch Replacement

The clutch in my 1966 4-speed 350HP finally gave up the ghost this past week. While I have the transmission out and bell housing off, I want to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. I am also contemplating replacing the flywheel with an aluminum one. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to get these replacement parts and any experience/ recommendations on putting in an aluminum flywheel? I have heard that putting in an aluminum flywheel can make the car less "streetable." Thanks.

    Tom-----

Your best bet for a stock replacement is going to a LUK/Sachs unit. You can get these as a complete kit which includes matched pressure plate assembly, friction disc, and release bearing. I would still have the unit precision-balanced before installing, though.

You can purchase these either in LUK packaging from various automotive suppliers or, even, in AC-Delco branded packaging from Delco parts sources. You get the same parts either way. These units are OEM quality.

I would forget about an aluminum flywheel. For street operation, all the features of it are a big NEGATIVE for you. A standard weight, stock-type 12-3/4" flywheel is what will do the best for you.

      Tom,
You may want to search the archives for a posting by Tim Bond on the subject of clutch replacement. Tim wrote a very informative "lessons learned" article after replacing the clutch and associated hardware in his mid-year Corvette. Good luck with your task.
      Best regards,

While the assembly is out, it is probably a good idea to balance the flywheel and pressure plate.

          Joe, Charlie and Verle:

Thank you for your responses and help. I am going to stick with a standard replacement vice aluminum.
