'56 to '57 Hardtop header conversion

What is involved in converting from the aluminum header bar ('56 style) to the stainless header ('57+) hardtop?

I know I need a different retainer and the new stainless pieces, but what are the steps that must be done in the conversion? Is it difficult?

David, I have no idea how to answer your...

...question, but let me throw out a few thoughts. If I'm thinking your hard top is the early '56 variety, it may be a rare, valuable piece in its own right. Trying to convert it to a later model may be foolhardy. If you haven't yet received email from someone that may lust after your hardtop, I would be somewhat surprised. In any case, I would seek out the appropriate hard top for your car and not try the conversion avenue. Just my silly opinion. Best, Dennis

PS - Also am confused with your terminology about aluminum headers vs stainless headers. I keep wanting to say all were aluminum headers (interior) and the outside trim on second design was stainless. As usual, I know just enough to be somewhat dangerous...

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to wonder why no one had done so. Maybe I confused everyone with my nomenclature. By header, I was referring to the exterior aluminum bar vs the exterior stainless trim, on the front. Perhaps that's the wrong term.

You are probably right about destroying a 1 year only (pretty limited availability) top and I had the same concern. I am going to continue my pursuit of a correct top, and hope to go that route, but its not working out yet. So, I am trying to figure out all my options.

Regardless, you have been helpful, because I feel bolstered to continue my quest for a correct top.
