    [Relatively Driven Early C4] Cleaning/Viewing #s

    Folks,

I've got a relatively high mileage for judging (58k now, will be 59k by the time I get it to Marlborough next month) 1985 Corvette with the L98 Tuned Port Injection motor. In the past, judges have had a ton of trouble seeing the engine numbers, which is obviously a problem. Other than spraying a ton of brake cleaner down the front of the engine after we drive up, does anybody have other suggestions?

I'm trying to keep my judges happy - I already have enough issues because a 58k C4 has dirt in places that 14ks, 12ks, and 10ks just don't have ...

John: I don't have any suggestions, but I can concur that judging the engine numbers on an early C-4 is very difficult. I had my '86 coupe judged a couple of years ago at the North Central Regional meet in Rochester, MN and I think I got a pass on that item. No one could see the numbers.

John, I believe that the Pittsburgh chapter was the first chapter to have a judging school strictly for C4's. At the time Tom Barr was our Chairman and he was instrumental into the development of our early C4 JM. My May 83 car, an 85 and I believe Chesters C4 were used as learning tools with a pre-approved manual or something like that. Anyhow the boys spent a lot of time on my car with various lights trying to read the pad. Bill Calarico and Tom Barr had one of those flexible lights that can read around corners and by sneaking in around all the crap you can see most of the number. It is up to you to have the pad clean as if the judges can't read it you will face the music. The CRC brake clean should clean up the pad. Maybe some Gumout carb and choke cleaner in a spray can could be step one and then follow up with the brake clean. Using the long red tubes of course. Others may have some better suggestions. I don't think we are restamping C4 blocks yet. But it's early. John D.
