Can a 700R4 transmission be installed in a 65 coupe(currently has a Turbo 350) without moving the engine forward for clearance upon installation. I know that the driveshaft has to be shortened, the exhause pipes moved and a mount fabricated, are there any other potential problems?
Thanks in advance.
Bill is correct, the 700R4 is a larger case than the T350.
If this is a small block driver (not serious performance) I suggest you consider a 200R4. If it is serious performance you can get 200R4 built to handle a lot of power.
It is the same size as the 350 and, I believe, about the same length.
Bowtie Overdrives at http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/index.shtml sells complete conversion kits to put a 700R4 in a midyear. They swear that no cutting is required. You can even get an OEM-style shift plate for the console that has the 4-speed pattern (I think this is made by Shiftworks). I have been planning to put a 700R4 in my 67 Powerglide car after I'm through with having the car NCRS judged, although the 5-speed Tremec manual is also tempting.
An alternative to the 700R4 is the 2004R, which is a 4-speed overdrive that is about the same size as a Turbo 350. I have read that a properly built 2004R will work fine unless you plan to drive the car very hard, and it might even bolt in with no changes to the driveshaft or transmission mount.
Guys, thanks for all the info. I will tell you how it works out when I'm done. Hopefully I'll drive the 65 to Carlisle in August. See you at the SACC tent.
Thanks again.
