OT - Gas Tank send unit leak... Help please...

OK, 1957 Nomad, new fuel tank, new sending unit, new rubber gasket. Send unit is exposed at about 3/4 to 7/8 full. Got a seep, screws are very tight. Was told cork gasket might be better...??? Any thoughts on a possible gasket sealant or double rubber gasket? Any ideas on how I might try to cure this issue? Of course, I'm looking for the easy cure. Thanks for any thoughts. DC

Hmmmmm. Interesting thought about cork. As you know 63-74 Corvettes used 1/16” cork. But those are on the fuel filler neck and they generally aren’t submerged but do take a Sloshing (if that is a word.) Is the Nomad sender the same 5 holer as a C1?

I think the gasket has a kink in it.It may need to be reseated.May need new gasket if the screws made it worse.did you lube the gasket?

Ok, I understand the Jack Daniels, I understand the pine tar as a sealant, but can you explain the douche powder? And just HOW do you know about this?

Dennis, Try some cure all stuff. Permatex Aviation #3 gasket sealant. I heard that that now it is made by Loctite. Trick is to let it sit up for a day or so. I use it for the hi-pressure pump seals on the FI's and as long as bubba hasn't used a chiesel to remove the seals-there are no leaks. Another one of my favorites that you could use is Loctite 545-hydraulic sealant. MSC or Travers sells it. It's my all time favorite. Shake the container and put it on with a q-tip or swab. Let it sit for a day or so also. I just thought of something. Now here this. You said rubber gasket. Probably the wrong kind of rubber. When gas hits it the rubber could be swelling up and leaking. I forgot about that. I've had some trouble of the years with repro rubber gaskets for the old FI's. Between the hi-pressure pump and the fuel bowl a thin rubber gasket is used as you well know. Well one of the old repros swelled and you know the rest. Make sure the gasket is at least buna-rubber. With today's corn gas though buna won't cut it. Switch to viton rubber. Or forget all the above and use a cheap hunk of cork with some good point deduction slop on it. On my little white car-the 63 the boys spotted a dab of slop on one of the inlet fittings on the fuel pump. Says on judging sheet-no sealant-. Yea rite. John
