    AFB information needed

Greetings, I acquired an AFB 3461S J2. My 1963 coupe is #1293 a 300hp model. The build code is B2. Is J2 Oct. 62, or does Carter skip the "I" making this Sept. 62? If this is an Oct. 62 carb, could it have been possible for it to have made it's way onto a second week October car? To simplify, would this carb be correct from a date standpoint?

Also both primary and secondary shafts are seized. What's the best chemical solution to soak it in to free them up? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks to all.

I'll offer a comment on your siezed shaft problem: most probably your siezed shafts are the result of dissimilar metal or galvanic corrosion. The steel throttle shafts in contact with the aluminum carburetor body in a moist(humid) environment are all it takes to get this started. Then it proceeds inexorably.

I don't know that soaking it in any chemical solution is going to work, but before you try that anyway, I'd recommend trying to free up the shafts using penetrating oil. The best products out there are GM Heat Riser Valve Lubricant and Aerokroil manufactured by Kano Labs. If neither of these products work for you, you may be in trouble on this one.

As far as a dip solution goes, the best bet is probably a dip carburetor parts cleaning solution such as those manufactured by Berryman and Mechanix Brand. These are a carbolic acid-based cleaner and can be quite effective for cleaning carburetor parts. Your case is special, though, inasmuch as the cleaner will have a hard time getting to the area that needs to be cleaned. If you do use these products, be very careful with them----they are EXTREMELY toxic and nasty. DO NOT DISPOSE OF THEM IMPROPERLY.

Hi Mike, you're in luck, according to the pocket NCRS Spec Guide (pg 3), Carter did not use an "I" to represent the month of September..

Also, per the NCRS Birthday Book authored by Dennis Moore, your car (#1293) was assembled about Oct 9th, 1962. It was one of 90 that day...

Hope this helps, Bob ~ #21991
