    '62 Engine Smoke--Blowby?

I have a '62 360 HP that I have owned for around a year. It has about 15k on a previous owners rebuild. The FI unit was also rebuilt by a previous owner. I do not know what cam, CR, etc that are in the car but I believe them to be close to stock as the engine has good vacuum and runs strong and idles ok (some lope but not excessive). I have around 36 degrees of advance at 3k rpm and no detonation.

Every time I drive the car I come home smelling strongly of gasoline. I thought it might have been a leak at the filler neck or vent tube, but I noticed something recently that is making me second guess this diagnosis. When the car is warm, you can see "exhaust" coming out of the road draft tube. To a lesser extent you can also see it coming out of the oil filler.

My first reaction was blow-by, but with a recent rebuild I did not expect to see blow-by. Also, I do not get any noticible smoke out the exhaust during either acceleration or deceleration. I do not burn a noticible amount of oil. I do have an oil leak though so it is hard to be precise

Yesterday I performed a leak down test on the right cylinder bank and all the cylinders showed virtually no leakage (5% or so) and I can't hear any hiss from the oil tube, dipstick tube (or exhaust or venturi). I did not do the left bank as I had a limited amount time. This is my first leak down test and I am using a tester from Harbor Freight, but it seems like a decent tool and if I use it when a valve is open the leakage % starts shooting up so I hope it is accurate.

I did recently replace the plugs and all were very clean and uniform (both banks). So much so that I feel the FI unit might be a bit lean. Regardless, if I had bad rings I would think a plug or two would foul, right?

Should I be concerned about this exhaust from the road draft tube/oil filler? What else could cause this? Could it be something else? Why do I stink like gas after a drive?

    Thanks in advance!

It is normal for a road draft tube to perform as you describe. I would be looking at the gas cap, filler neck hose, and vent hose for the tank.
