'65 Carter AFB Air Cleaner Stud

    Hello,

I wanted tor replace the air cleaner foam and screen by a paper air cleaner (Harrison for all 63-65 250-300hp, ordered at Corvette Central) on my '65 300hp Corvette with Carter AFB 3721. The paper cleaner is thicker and thus I can't put the wing nut on, because the stud doesn't look out of the cover enough. The question is:
Should the shorter thread side of stud be screwed in the carb body or the longer one. In the AIM it seems that's the shorter one but this is not possible on my carb. The stud doesn't grasp in this case, only when the longer thread side is used. The stud seems to be the correct one compared with the pic on corvette central online.

    Regards
    Oliver

Re: '65 Carter AFB Air Cleaner Stud/filter

The threaded portion of the stud for the wing nut is about 1/2" long on my 3461S, and the length of exposed stud from the air horn to the end of the thread is about 1 1/4". So is that the "long" or "short" end by your definition?

What air filter - mfg/part no. - are you using? Harrison? What does that refer to?

The NAPA 2070/Wix 42070 is the Wix replacement for the out-of-production AC A353C replacement filter for '63-'65 carbureted engines. The 2070 might be a hair taller, but it should work.

Wix has an online catalog including cross reference at:

Re: '65 Carter AFB Air Cleaner Stud/filter

      Duke,

      I made a mistake, it's a Hastings air cleaner (not Harrison) http://catalog.hastingsfilter.com/:
      PART NUMBER: AF17
      Descriptions : Air Element
Fits : 1963-67 Cadillac, Chevrolet, Dodge Automotive
      Replaces : Chrysler 2402368; Ford ECJ-9601-B
      O.D. : 12 13/16 (325.4)
      I.D. : 11 1/32 (280.2)
      Length : 2 5/32 (54.8)
It similar to the NAPA 2070, according to their x reference site.
What you write about long/short is what I mean.
My problem is that I live in Germany and neither NAPA nor WIX is available here, thus I have to order from a company selling to Germany.
The stud of your '63 Carter should be the same than the for the '65 according to the corvette central catalog. When I put this Hastings in, the end of the stud and the air cleaner cover hole are even - no thread left for the wing nut.

      Regards
      Oliver
