C1 Order of Washers and Nuts on 091 Coil

    Hi all,

Just got wondering about the correct installation of nuts and washers and the electrical connectors on the 091 coil with the square washer. I have seen some coils come out of the box new. There was the big square washer, a nut, and no lock washer.

This leads me to think that the electrical connectors should go under the washer and that the nut tightens the square washer down onto them. However, I have seen original cars with the connectors on top of the square washer and then a lock washer and nut over that. The fact that the square washer has turned up edges may also indicate that the connectors went on top.

The question is why bother with the square washer at all and worry about a tab on the washer or shoulders on the coil post to keep it from turning if the connectors were on top of it and a lock washer on top of that? So, what is the correct order of installation for all these?

    Thanks,

    Bob

Note, there is no lock washer called out/used on similar 'critical' electrical connections at the ballast resistor! The square washer is there to spread the force of connection evenly across the semi-fragile mounting surface (Bakelite pad for the coil and ceramic for the ballast resistor).

Electrical contact is achived via the mounting nut's contact to the threaded electrical post and the bottom side of the nut making a 'sandwich' contact against the lead wire's terminal and the square mounting washer below. Sometimes you will see lock washers installed between the nut and the wiring harness terminal(s), but that's simply a 'belts & suspenders' safeguard against vibration loosening the nut....

So, from bottom to top, the assy sequence is: native Bakelite mounting pad, square washer, wiring harness lead wires and finally, mounting nut.
