Ive got some new tires for my 95' and i want to take the wheels off myself and just take them to a local place to break them off the rims and put on the new,, my question is,, whats the best and safest place for me to use my floor jack doing 2 tires at a time,, I also have a kwiklift with the bridge i can use but dont know where to place the jacks ,,,,need help please,, thanks,, doug

Do you have an owner's manual for your car? Typically, the owner manuals show you the recommended jacking locations, and will even have crude diagrams (somewhat helpful).
You will likely find that the recommended locations are the front and rear suspension crossmembers. Use a wood block between your jack and the crossmembers...I believe C4 crossmembers are aluminum, and you don't want to bugger them up.- Top

Actually, on my '89 there is a set of letters underneath the door sills that shows the jack location. It is to be used on the metal frame, just behind the front wheelhouse, or in front of the rear. I use a block of wood between my frame and jack to minimize any marking. The jacking point locations are molded into the vertical fin that runs the length of the lowest point of the body between the front and rear wheels. A flashlight an some time on your back should show the location easily.Bill Clupper #618- Top

A friend of mine with a C4 (1991, I think) told me recently that he used a block of wood between the jack and the jacking point and ended up cracking the fiberglass panel. When he mentioned this to a Corvette mechanic, the mechanic told him that this is a known problem.
I can't remember the details of the explanation, but apparently the location where the jack is specified to go deflects slightly before it comes to rest against an internal steel reinforcement. If you use a large wood block to try and spread the load, you end up forcing deflection in a larger area of the panel than was intended.
It sounds as though using a wood block is okay, but the footprint of the wood block should not be larger than the contact area of the jack.
I do not have independent knowledge about this; I'm just repeating what I have heard, but I thought I would mention it.- Top

Mike, good presentation on lifting your ZR1. Not to many hockey pucks in garage sales around in the south. I use leather on my jack stand tops as well, old moccasin house shoes, lined side up. My wife just gives me that look when I didn't throw them away, more clutter in the garage. How different is the ZR1's laminated "solar" windshield from the other C4's?- Top

Because the AC condenser is smaller (to accommodate the oil cooler, I believe), the ZR-1 has reduced AC performance compared to a regular c4. So - the windshield includes a tinted laminate to reduce sun load, in an attempt to make up for reduced cooling capacity. So in that regard the windshield is unique from the normal c-4. I am not sure if these windshields are currently available. Due to a de-laminating issue, there was a movement afoot within the zr-1 community to find someone to supply a quantity of these windshields on a one time basis, but I'm not sure how that worked out. I was living out of the country for a few years, and lost touch with what was happening in the ZR-1 world.- Top
