    64 Voltage Regulator Mount ? (con't)

    Hi all again,

Well after everyone me convinced me to go buy and use well nuts to mount my voltage regulator to the right side radiator support I did just that. What I don't understand is why the three holes are so small. It truly appears that this car only used self tapping screws and not the longer screws and well nuts like the parts houses are selling. I wish I had a definite answer. Oh well off to my AIM.

    cheers,

    Craig

Well nuts were used to mount the V-reg in the FIBERGLASS of the inner fender, Craig. I don't have a '64 AIM, but the '65 setup is shown in the engine section, UPC 6, Sheet B4. It ought to be close for '64.

The horn relay is mounted to/through the rad core support and the V-reg mounts via well nuts through the inner fender adjacent to the horn relay. There's a discrete ground wire that connects the two (MUST have for things to work)...

Craig, I have a Mar64 car with regulator mounted on passangers side of raditor support as yours appears to be. It's an FI can, however do not think (do not know for sure) that matters.

The regulator is held on by three screws - one on top that also holds the cap and the other two at the bottom on each side. These are screwed directly into the radiator support, ie no rubber isolators. I did not find any info in the AIM, however on page D199 the screw for the horn relay appears to be the same ones (3) used for regulator (pn 8415499)

Take a short at posting the question over at vetteheads.com, believe some of those guys know a lot about 63/64 cars.

        Jack,

I understand about the two inconnecting but everyone seemed to response to my previous question as to having the darn thing mount to the radiator support with well nuts. Noone mentioned it needed to mount to the fender well. Seeing as I have now used well nuts and mounted it to my radiator support as everyone stated before now the darn thing is mounted incorrectly. I thought the three holes on the radiator support were too small for the well nuts but everyone continued to say it used well nuts.

The Judging Guide says for a 64 it mounts to the right side of the radiator support. Oh well I guess I should have gone with my first instinct.

        Cheers,

        Craig

Craig, my 64 June car had the reg mounted to the rad support with three sheet metal screws with hex head, no insulators.

Re: 64 Voltage Regulator Mount ?

I did verify last night that my voltage reg is mounted directly to support with three (3) screws; 3/8 hex head, intergal washer, recessed head with "E" marking, about 1/2" self tapping and finished in bright cad. I do agree the AIM shows it on the fiberglass fender, however I bet the 63 was mounted on rad support and that was continued into 64 at least until Mar64.

My P&A (1972) calls out for the use of well nuts, but again its a newer reference - other members have older P&A books and hopefully will look at problem.

Since even the repro houses seem to list well nuts for 64-67 It is reasonable to assume that some cars in 64 had the reg mounted on rad support and used the well nuts as the change filtered through production. I know many survivor 64 are set up as mine and yours - so get some pictures to show the judge.
