    Restoration Service

Does anyone have experience with Twin Oaks Classic Corvette in Maquoketa, IA? They seem very knowledgable. I am considering having them do some resto work on my mid year big block, but would like to know if anyone knows their work. Thanks

    Re: Restoration Service

    Dear Tom,

I have had two complete restorations done by Todd Spain at Twin Oaks. Not many shops go to the level of detail that his shop does. My '58 Duntoved in '96 and am currently putting through a '61 Big Brake Fuel car that will be at the National at Bowling Green. I've known Todd for 8 years and he has a great reputation and you can feel confident the work you'll have done will be to your satisfaction. If you have any other questions Tom, please feel free to e-mail me.

Let me offer some ideas that may make your restoration a little less stressful. Try to get the shop to commit to some dates, in writing. You may need to include progress payments to entice them to do it. For instance, get them to commit to a certain date to have the bodywork finished, then pay them for that portion upon completion. The problem is that most shops have no schedule, and are very vague so that you never know what they are doing or when it will be finished. Now, if you don't mind waiting a couple years or more for the car this may not matter, but if you want the car in a reasonable amount of time they should agree to this. Jerry Bramlett usually has good advice on this type of stuff, hopefully he'll post something up here for you. Best of luck! Jeff

Jeff is right, get a schedule. A friend of mine has a '56 T-Bird that has been at the body shop, get this, for 7 years. The main problem is the quick cash from smaller insurance jobs are much more lucrative than major restoration jobs. It would also help if you were dealing with a shop that does minimal insurance work, but those a hard to find. Good luck, David
