I'm needing help with a paint issue. Are the differential nuts, and ratio tag painted or unpainted. I can't find any info on either. Also, does anyone know what a 3:27 ratio tag looks like for a '56. Can't find anyone that reproduces it. Thanks in advance.

Re: C1 Differential - tag is round for 55-57
Tag is round and unpainted with ink stamp gear ratio. Lots of discussions on whether the ring/pinion gear housing (pumpkin, pig, center section) was painted, primered or natural finish. Current JM doesn't address its finish. Some of the nuts I've removed were black treated, not painted and some were natural steel. Was unable to tell if the finished had worn off over the years from the nuts that didn't show any type of finish on them. The axle housing itself was painted. Hope this helps. Re: C1 Differential - tag is round for 55-57
My '57 has the original rear axle and differential and it has the correct tag for the 4.11 gear ratio the housing is stamped for. The tag was in the 2 O'clock position and appeared to have never been removed.- Top

Re: C1 Differential - tag is round for 55-57
Gary,
The tag is a round shape with two cuts on a tangent bringing one half of the circle almost to a point opposite from the mounting hole. The finish appears to be natural with no plating evident. I will send a picture of the tag and diff this evening when I get home.
