Thanks. Try this. See that the RH end is a male thread chaser and the LH end is a female

          Re: Tap size?

Geroge, I just checked and my tap is 7/16 x24 HSS Dick W is rite. I believe though it's the first time he has been rite so far.
Anyhow I have never heard of a chaser tap for that size. The HS number determines the depth of the cut or thread. Like Joe Lucia said the tap is not your standard type but should be readily available in industrial tool catalogs. Traver, MSC, Mc-Master CArr. THe first two will give you a catalog for the asking. But McMaster Carr will NOT provide you with a catalog unless you are in the business. I have tried for years to get one from them but am turned down. I have to bum used ones from friends.

Here's the tap you need: Travers 800-221-0270 7/16-24
Taper: 14-028-241, Plug tap 14-028-242, Bottoming: 14-028-243 Each tap cost 11.80 TTL high speed steel special thread taps. Others can tell you which one or two of the three to buy. I use the tapered taps and the bottoming taps all the time-various sizes of course. But I don't use the plug taps just because I don't own any that I know of.
          Now here is a short lesson.7/16 taps are availabe in a long long list of threads per inch. 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 26, 27, 28, 32, 36, 40, 48, etc.

            John,
Have you tried their web site lately? They have made some improvements to it and the search function works much better than before. I haven't been able to find my paper catalogue for years, but the web site has worked well enough for me that I don't feel the need. They have a warehouse that is close to me, so I buy a lot from them – YMMV

Terry, Thanks for the info. There web site is wonderful. I still like to scan the catalogs themselves though. Good bathroom reading material. John
