    Tank sheet question

It looks like the tank sheet on my 1970, which is in very poor shape, may not list the engine. I have seen other examples of this. Does anyone know why this is? Also, is there any way to correlate the ID# on the tank sheet to the VIN#. I was thinking of having it looked at by a forensic document guy, but I don't know if it's worth the money if the engine isn't listed and it can't be correlated to the VIN. Thanks.

I don't believe a standard engine would apear. There is no correlation to the vin.

At least in '69, the last 3 digits of the VIN, (if over 500, then less 500), are hand-written on the tank sheet. Usually the last 4 are also handwritten, smaller and fainter (perhaps pencil).

The "Ident" number listed in the upper left corner of the tank sticker has NO correlation to the VIN#. The Ident number was assigned when the tank sticker was created (when the order for the car came into GM) long before the VIN# which was assigned numerically as the chassis went down the assy line. Cars were not necessarily built in the order that the sales orders came in. , due to parts supplies etc.

As stated the penciled 3 digit number is typically the last 3 digits of the VIN# or in many early cases within 1 or 2 digits.....

Standard engines were not always called out on stickers. Again early stickers called out standard items as "8STD EN" for engine and "8STD TM" for standard trim.

          Tom,

On my '68's build sheet, the standard engine is listed. I'm not sure how it was done in 1970.

          Here's a look.

Thank you for your responses. Let me add this. On the tank sheet, the right sided print (specific to the car), which is now an illegible ink stain is misaligned and is in between the space for "Engine" and "Air conditioning" on the form. Its a non A/C car. I am making the assumption that the space to the right of "Air conditioning" is left blank in a non A/C car, therefore the glob of ink I have was likely the engine info.

Is it true that the space to the right of "Air conditioning" is left blank in non A/C cars? Or, is there some language like "standard", etc.? Thanks again.

NO A/C = no option number or description!! The area will be blank.

The same goes for blank areas for convertible tops on a coupe build sheet.

                    Anthony,

How close to your vin are the handwritten numbers on your tank sticker? I too have a 1968 and was told it should be within 500 of my vin. lmk

                      Greg,

If the last 3 of your VIN are less than 500, the number should be either within a few (+ or -). If the last 3 are over 500, the numbers should be within a few of your VIN minus 500.

                      Hope this helps.

Mathmatically it may work out that way, but the job number had nothing to do with the VIN as I recall.

The job #'s ran from 1-500 and started all over. Occassionaly you will get one that matches the VIN. I have owned one that did, and another that is off 3 #'s.

On a slightly different note. Several years ago I saw the tank sticker that was removed from a '69 base engine car. The sticker called for, are you ready for this?, a ZL-1 engine and all the mandantory options. The job # on the sticker was one # off from what was chalked on the body. Tank stickers most of the time do match the options but occassionally you will see something such as this.

                              Greg,

My VIN sequence is 9736, which minus the "223" on my build sheet is 13 off of the 500 mark.

As per Drew Papsun, this is within normal limits. He has a large registry of VIN #'s vs. Build sheet #'s. He is definitely the guy to ask on this issue.

                              Good luck,

                              Anthony
